Gupteshwor Cave - A Tourist Destination in Kusma Municipality

Among the various tourist attractions in the Kusma Municipality area, the renowned Gupteshwor Cave stands out. It holds significant importance from historical, religious, cultural, and tourist perspectives, making it a vast and mystical cave with beautifully carved sculptures of various deities, fulfilling the desires of devotees. Believed to be a place where Goddess Parvati meditated after being upset with Lord Shiva and later revealed herself, the cave is named Gupteshwor, signifying the hidden presence of Lord Shiva.

During the Lichchhavi era, when the Rajput king Jayapida invaded Nepal, he used the caves in this region for shelter. The local legend suggests that these caves, especially Gupteshwor Cave, played a vital role during that period. In 1991, a group of locals, including Ratnabahadur Karki, Dalbahadur Rana Magar, Shyam Prasad Joshi, Dhan Bahadur Joshi, Sarve Khatri, and Rupanarayan Shrestha, discovered the cave. The cave's uniqueness lies in its intricately carved sculptures of Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and other deities.

Gupteshwor Cave is located near Damdare Khola in Ward No. 4 of Kusma Municipality. Situated approximately 800 meters from the Pokhara-Baglung highway, it covers an estimated area of 2 kilometers. In 2050 B.S., a local committee named "Gupteshwor Dharmik Tatha Paryatakiya Bikas Samiti" was formed with the approval of the district administration office, overseeing the conservation and management of the cave.

The cave has become a significant religious and tourist destination, attracting people from different parts of Nepal and even neighboring countries. Devotees flock to the cave during Mahashivaratri, Balachaturdashi, and the month of Shravan for worship. The cave provides a cooling experience, even in the scorching heat, making it a sought-after destination.

Kusma Municipality has recognized the potential of Gupteshwor Cave as a major tourist attraction and has initiated various development projects. With ongoing efforts to promote tourism and enhance facilities, Gupteshwor Cave has the potential to become one of the prominent tourist destinations in the Gandaki Province.
