The smallest cattle breed of the world Achhami Cow (Bos indicus)

The smallest cattle breed, recognized as Achhami, is found in the mountainous districts of Nepal's Far Western region, namely Achham, Bajhang, Bajura, and Doti. These cattle are acknowledged as the smallest breed globally. The local residents refer to them as "Nau Muthe," as their height, measured from the hoof to the shoulder, amounts to nine fists or handbreadths. Due to their diminutive size, locals often colloquially term them as "Nau Muthe" Gai. These cattle can be sustained with minimal food and are even bred in some farms, such as Pokhara's Gaibhaisi Farm. Given their low population and the abandonment of their breeding by farmers, efforts to collect their semen for selective breeding purposes are underway at the Livestock Breeding Section in Khumaltar, focusing on this unique breed. The declining numbers and reduced interest from farmers may pose a threat to the existence of this breed.
